INFORMAL IMPERATIVE  / IMPERATIVO INFORMAL

 

Imperative

As it was taught in the first lesson about Commands in Spanish a special type of mood is used when ordering or telling someone an order. This special type of mood is called Imperative form or commands and basically it is used to strongly influence the listener’s behavior or action. Read the examples below.

Examples:

  • Maneje Ud el coche (Drive the car!)
  • Compren  Uds el coche (Buy the car!)
  • Abre Ud la botella (Open the bottle!)

In the first lesson you learned how to use Commands in affirmative sentences for the persons Ud and Uds. In this lesson you’ll learn how to conjugate the Imperative Mood for the person Tú.

It is very easy and simple to form sentences in the imperative form for the person . The commands for the person Tú have the same conjugation used for the third person singular in the simple present. Study the chart below:

 

Verbs ending in ar:

 

Third Person Singular – Simple Present

 Informal You

Command – for person Tú

Ud maneja el coche  (You-formal – drive the car)

Maneja el coche (You informal – Drive the car!)

Ud compra el coche (You formal – buy the car)

Compra el coche (You informal – Buy the car!)

 

Verbs ending in er:

 

Third Person  Singular– Simple Present

Informal You

Command – for persons Tú

Ud escoje el libro ( You formal – choose the book)

Escoje el libro (You informal – Choose the book!)

Ud come el postre (You formal – eat the desert)

Come el postre (You informal – Eat the desert!)

Command – for persons Tú

Ud abre la botella (You formal – open the bottle)

Abre la botella (You informal – Open the bottle!)

Ud escribe la carta (You formal – write the letter)
