How to use verb “tener”?

Verb “tener” can be used in two different ways:

1. To express that someone possesses something

Examples:

  • (Yo) Tengo un perro. (I have a dog)
  • (Tú) Tienes un perro. (You have a dog)
  • Él tiene un perro. (He has a dog)
  • Ella tiene un perro (She has a dog)
  •  Usted tiene un perro. (You have a dog – formal)
  • (Nosotros) Tenemos un perro. (We have a dog)
  • Ellos tienen un perro. (They have a dog)
  • Ustedes tienen un perro. (You have a dog – formal)

 

2. To express that someone has to do something. In this case it is necessary to use the following formula:  Tener (conjugated according to the person) + que + verb in the infinitive form.

Examples:

  • (Yo) Tengo que limpiar la casa. (I have to clean the house)
  • (Tú) Tienes que limpiar la casa. (You have to clean the house)
  • Él tiene que limpiar la casa. (He has to clean the house)
  • Ella tiene que limpiar la casa. (She has to clean the house)
  •  Usted tiene que limpiar la casa. (You have to clean the house – formal)
  • (Nosotros) Tenemos que limpiar la casa. (We have to clean the house)
  • Ellos tienen que limpiar la casa. (They have to clean the house)
  • Ustedes tienen que limpiar la casa. (You have to clean the house – formal)
