The weather / El tiempo

Expressing the weather in Spanish is different from English especially because Spanish speakers use verb hacer (to make / to do) to describe the weather. Study (and listen to) the sentences below:

Hace sol.  
It's sunny.

Hace calor.  
It's hot.

Hace frío.  
It's cold.

Hace fresco.  
It's cool.

Hace viento.  
It's windy.

Hace bueno.  
It's nice.

Hace buen tiempo.  
The weather is good.

Hace mal tiempo.  
The weather is bad.

 

Observe that the words “sol”, “calor”, “viento” are nouns in Spanish. Because of that the expression “it’s very hot” is translated to “hace mucho calor” and not to “hace muy calor”. Study (and listen to) the sentences below:

Hace mucho frío.  
It's very cold.

Hace mucho sol.  
It's very sunny.

Hace mucho calor.  
It's very hot.

Hace mucho viento.  
It's very windy.
